Burglar Alarm Advice

If you choose to have a burglar alarm in your property, then it will be crucial you have one that does its job well and gives you peace of mind. The type you have will largely depend on the level of security you need and the layout of your home.

What do you want to happen once the burglar alarm is triggered?

When you have a burglar alarm, you need to think about what you want to happen once it does go off. An alarm can make a lot of noise, but not contact anyone. Some come with speech dialers, and what this does, is contact your family and friends that you’ve nominated as soon as the alarm goes off. You could sign up with a company that would contact the police should the alarm go off, it’s entirely up to you.

There will be a difference in cost depending on what you go with. If an alarm system gives you peace of mind, especially when you go away, then the cost may be irrelevant to you.

Wireless or wired alarm?

Wireless alarms use battery powered sensors and are easy to install or remove. A wired system on the other hand, will need to be installed by a professional alarm fitter. This is a specialized alarm which requires hidden wires, and as you can imagine, the cost is higher than for a wireless one.

Bell Alarm

This is good as a prevention tool, as it will deter intruders with a loud alarm ringing. This type of alarm is simple and doesn’t contact police or a nominated friend or family member.

The type of burglar alarm you choose for your home will be determined by how many valuables you have and how high the crime rate is in your area.

Keep Your Alarm in Working Order

You should carry out regular maintenance on your burglar alarm so it is always in good working order. It is a waste of time and money if you never touch your alarm again once it’s been installed.

You could sign up for a maintenance contract and that way a company will come and check your alarm once or twice a year. This is done either remotely or in person.

There are also alarms where a company alerts the police or a nominated key holder. There is a variety of different ones and we will be looking at each one in turn.

Speech Dialer

This is usually a system by where the burglar alarm is connected to a wireless or wired alarm. When it goes off, the dialer will then automatically text or call numbers you have given it for family members, and even leave a message if no one answers. As opposed to a monitoring service by a professional company, this is a great alternative.

Key Holder Monitoring

The key holder method is where a company will respond when the burglar alarm is triggered and contact either you or nominated family members. This is done remotely. If you nominate someone you trust to be the key holder, they must live within 20 minutes of where you live, be able to drive and have keys to the house. You must pass on their details to the alarm company so they are up to date with who to contact should the alarm go off.

Police Monitoring

The company you choose to receive your alarm must be registered with the local police for this to work, so you’ll need to check this out if you require this type of police assistance. The company will call the police if there is no reply from you, or when they call and ask for the password, it is incorrect.
